Ductwork and crawlspace ducts in Greenville

In a lot of Greenville houses the ducts run through a crawlspace or a hot attic, not the living space. A leak there pulls humid outside air into the house, and an uninsulated duct in a damp crawlspace can sweat. Sealing and insulating ducts often does more for comfort than a bigger unit. Cleaning helps in fewer cases, and Fixr puts it at $300 to $700.

Signs the ducts are the problem

  • One or two rooms never cool, while the rest of the house is fine.
  • The house is cool but sticky, and the system runs a long time.
  • Dust comes back quickly after cleaning.
  • Water dripping from ducts or the air handler in the crawlspace, or a musty smell from the vents when the system starts.

Crawlspace ducts

Many homes in eastern North Carolina sit on a vented crawlspace. In summer the air under the house is warm and humid, and a duct carrying 55 degree air through it will collect condensation unless its insulation and vapor barrier are intact. Torn insulation, a disconnected joint or a crushed run can drip onto the ground, wet the floor framing and feed mold. A technician can check this from the crawlspace hatch in a few minutes.

About 30% of homes in the Pitt County ZIP codes we cover were built before 1980 (Census ACS 2020-2024), and their ducts may have been added or patched more than once. Another 11% are mobile or manufactured homes, which usually run the duct under the floor in a belly board that can tear or come loose.

Attic ducts

Ducts in an attic sit in air far hotter than the house all summer. A leak dumps cooled air into the attic and pulls hot air back in. Rooms at the end of a long run suffer most.

When cleaning makes sense

  • After construction or a remodel that put drywall dust into the system.
  • Signs of rodents or insects in the ducts.
  • Visible mold on duct surfaces or the indoor coil. Fix the moisture source too, or it comes back.

If none of those apply, I'd spend the money on a duct inspection and sealing first. Fixr's 2026 figures put air duct cleaning at $300 to $700, with a national average of $500 for a 2,000 sq ft home. Be wary of a very low advertised price that turns into a much larger bill once the crew is inside.

Greenville Utilities Commission's free energy audit includes a look at the ducts as well as insulation and air sealing (call 252-551-1521). It is a cheap way to find out where the leaks are before you pay anyone to fix them.

Questions Greenville homeowners ask

Why are my ducts sweating under the house?

Cool air inside the duct meets warm, humid crawlspace air on the outside. If the duct insulation or its vapor barrier is torn, condensation forms and drips. Have the insulation repaired and any leaky joints sealed.

How much does duct cleaning cost?

Fixr's national figures are $300 to $700, with a $500 average for a 2,000 sq ft home. Local prices vary; get the full price before the crew starts.
